A white security guard was filmed body slamming a 16-year-old girl to the floor of a Kroger grocery store on March 24 in Toledo, Ohio.
The Kroger security guard, identified by police as 32-year-old Tom Clingo, was accused by witnesses of using excessive force on the girl, notes The Toledo Blade.
The teen girl and another juvenile were approached about “miscellaneous items” that they allegedly tried to take from the store, according to the police. The second juvenile reportedly fled the scene.
Toledo resident Tevin Ford filmed the incident and posted the video on Facebook, which labeled the video with a warning: “This video may show violence against a child or teenager.”
Despite the warning, the video has gone viral.
Clingo told The Toledo Blade that Kroger told him to direct questions to Toledo Police Department whose officer showed up after the incident.
A Kroger manager also refused to comment.
Toledo Police Department spokesman Sgt. Kevan Toney said the teen girl was arrested and charged with robbery, but Clingo was not charged.
Toney seemed far more concerned that the public did not think Clingo worked for the police:
It’s important to note that this was not a Toledo police officer and is in no way affiliated with the department. If people were upset with the manner in which he acted, they should contact Kroger, I suppose.
The teen girl needed medical attention for injuries, andClingo had several bruises from slamming the girl down, per the police report.
