President Donald Trump whined about fake news after he was caught on tape criticizing UK Prime Minister Theresa May.
Trump criticized May’s new Brexit plan during an interview with The Sun:
If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the UK, so it will probably kill the deal. If they do that, then their trade deal with the US will probably not be made…
I would have done it much differently. I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn’t agree, she didn’t listen to me. She wanted to go a different route. I would actually say that she probably went the opposite way. And that is fine. She should negotiate the best way she knows how. But it is too bad what is going on.
BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg asked Trump during a press conference about the criticism:
Our countries are meant to have a special relationship, yet you publicly criticized the prime minister’s policy and her personally for not listening to you this week.
Is that really the behavior of a friend and, prime minister, isn’t the problem for you that some of the things Mr. Trump has said about your Brexit plan, are right. It will limit the possibilities of doing trade deals easily in the future.
Trump whined about “fake news” while lying about not criticizing May:
I didn’t criticize the prime minister. I have a lot of respect for the prime minister. And unfortunately, that was a story that was done which was, you know, generally fine, but it didn’t put in what I said about the prime minister — and I said tremendous things.
And fortunately, we tend to record stories now, so we have it for your enjoyment if you’d like it, but we record when we deal with reporters. It’s called fake news. We solve a lot of problems with the good old recording instrument.
