President Donald Trump denied that he said he wanted teachers to carry guns on Feb. 21, and then suggested that teachers and other school staff should carry guns for a bonus in pay:
These people are cowards. They’re not going to walk into a school if 20% of the teachers have guns — it may be 10% or may be 40%. And what I’d recommend doing is the people that do carry, we give them a bonus. We give them a little bit of a bonus. They’ll frankly feel more comfortable having the gun anyway. But you give them a little bit of a bonus.
White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah told reporters that Trump’s gun policy “hasn’t been fleshed out” but added, “Do we really think that that’s too much to pay for school safety?” notes CNN.
Contrary to his denial, Trump did say he wanted teachers to carry guns on Feb. 21:
It’s called concealed carry. A teacher would have a concealed gun on them. They would go for special training, and they would be there, and you would no longer have a gun-free zone.
