An armed teacher reportedly fired a gun inside a classroom at Dalton High School in Georgia, causing students to flee.
Student and Twitter user wesleycaceres5 filmed panicked students running through school hallways; one girl was reportedly injured during the evacuation.
Police said Randal Davidson, a 53-year-old social studies teacher, was taken into custody after he fired at least one shot, notes the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Dalton police spokesman Bruce Frazier said the incident began when some students tried to get into Davidson’s classroom, but Davidson would not let them in.
According to Frazier, the kids notified the principal who tried to open the classroom door with his key, but Davidson forcibly closed it, which is when the principal heard a gunshot.
Police said a handgun was fired.
Davidson, who also announced sports on radio for the school, reportedly surrendered to police after 30 to 45 minutes.
One of the students mocked the NRA, which has called for arming teachers with guns, on Twitter:
@nra my favorite teacher at Dalton high school just blockaded his door and proceeded to shoot. We had to run out The back of the school in the rain. Students were being trampled and screaming. I dare you to tell me arming teachers will make us safe.
