Officials at Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom, California are asking students not to chant “USA!” at sporting events and rallies.
School and district officials say the chants could appear to be intolerant and offensive.
At some schools across the country, the “USA!” chant has been used in a derogatory manner against minority students.
Folsom Cordova Unified Communications Director Daniel Thigpen said, “To practice empathy, to practice kindness and to practice patriotism. You can do both.”
The school’s principal sent out an email to families on Sept. 12, and told students the new rules over the school’s P.A. system. The “USA!” chant is not outright banned, and will be allowed following the national anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance.
