Rep. Rob Bishop Compares Green New Deal To Genocide
Republican Rep. Rob Bishop compared the Green New Deal — proposed by Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts — to genocide.
Bishop — who has a long history of opposing laws that protect the environment — made his absurd claim during a press conference, notes Axios:
The ideas behind the Green New Deal are tantamount to genocide. That might be an overstatement but not by a whole lot.
Axios fact-checked Bishop’s false claim:
The Green New Deal is not at all related to genocide, which is defined as “the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.”
The Green New Deal calls for universal health care, a federal jobs guarantee, and curbing pollution that is dangerous for humans. The Green New Deal also calls for widespread decarbonization to deal with man-made climate change.
Despite a complete lack of evidence, Bishop tried to defend his bizarre claim to Axios:
I’m an ethnic. I’m a westerner… If you actually implement everything they want to. Killing would be positive if you implement everything the Green New Deal actually wants to. That’s why the the Green New Deal is not ready for prime time.
