Religious Right Groups Smear Southern Poverty Law Center

Several Religious Right groups have engaged in a campaign to smear the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights organization that has called out the religious groups for their anti-gay, anti-Muslim and other bigoted views.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled some extreme Christian right wing groups such as the Family Research Council as a “hate group.”

In July, D. James Kennedy Ministries produced a video that falsely accused the Southern Poverty Law Center of attacking Christians (including Christian viewers of the video) for simply holding Biblical views, notes Right Wing Watch.

The video included Mat Staver, who founded the Liberty Counsel and represented county clerk Kim Davis in her failed attempts to stop legal gay marriage in Kentucky, Jerry Boykin, Tony Perkins and Peter Spring of the Family Research Council, which has a long history of disparaging comments against gays and Muslims.

Representatives of the Family Research Council, The Heritage Foundation, Liberty Counsel,D. James Kennedy Ministries, ACT for America, WallBuilders, the American Family Association and others also signed an open letter to journalists on Sept. 6 in an effort to discredit the Southern Poverty Law Center.

As in the video, the letter tried to blame the Southern Poverty Law Center for the 2012 shooting of the Washington D.C. headquarters of the Family Research Council, which was committed by Floyd Lee Corkins.

In addition to producing the video, D. James Kennedy Ministries filed a defamation lawsuit in August against the Southern Poverty Law Center, GuideStar and Amazon, which has not included D. James Kennedy Ministries in its Amazon Smile fundraising program.
