Dr. Dolly Lucio Sevier was granted access to the detention center in McAllen, Texas — the largest CBP center in the country — after a flu outbreak there that sent five infants to an intensive care unit.
Lucio Sevier wrote about the horrific conditions for children — the youngest of whom is 2 1/2 months old — in a medical declaration obtained by ABC News:
The conditions within which they are held could be compared to torture facilities… extreme cold temperatures, lights on 24 hours a day, no adequate access to medical care, basic sanitation, water, or adequate food.
Lucio Sevier said the teens spoke of having no access to hand washing, which she called “tantamount to intentionally causing the spread of disease.”
Lucio Sevier eold ABC News the detention facility “felt worse than jail”:
It just felt, you know, lawless. I mean, imagine your own children there. I can’t imagine my child being there and not being broken.
