Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey Signs Law Criminalizing Nearly All Abortion, Admits It Will Be ‘Unenforceable’

Republican Gov. Kay Ivey of Alabama signed a near-total abortion ban. The Alabama Human Life Protection Act will force women and girls to give birth to their rapist’s baby; they will also have to carry still born babies to full term. The only exception is when the mother’s life is in danger.

Ivey admitted that the new law is likely to be “unenforceable” when it goes into effect in November because of the legal challenges it faces. Ivey also praised State Rep. Terri Collins and Sen. Clyde Chambliss for writing the new law, which will likely not be enforced.

Randall Marshall, executive director of the ACLU of Alabama, said his group would fight the ban, notes USA TODAY:

By signing this bill, the governor and her colleagues in the state legislature have decided to waste millions in Alabama taxpayer dollars in order to defend a bill that is simply a political effort to overturn 46 years of precedent that has followed the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision.
