Trump’s Lawyer Michael Cohen Says He Personally Paid Porn Star Stormy Daniels $130,000

President Donald Trump’s longtime personal lawyer Michael D. Cohen admitted that he personally paid $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, in 2016.

The Wall Street Journal reported in January 2018 that Daniels was paid $130,000 by Cohen on behalf of Trump who allegedly had a sexual affair with Daniels in 2006.

Cohen told The New York Times that his $130,000 payment to Daniels was not connected to Trump:

Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly. The payment to Ms. Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone.

Cohen would not say if Trump was aware that he made the payment or why he paid the Daniels the money.

Cohen claimed he made a similar statement to the Federal Election Commission in response to a complaint filed by the government watchdog group Common Cause:

The complaint alleges that I somehow violated campaign finance laws by facilitating an excess, in-kind contribution. The allegations in the complaint are factually unsupported and without legal merit, and my counsel has submitted a response to the F.E.C.

Daniels has not publicly denied an affair with Trump, although Cohen has claimed she has denied it.
