President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Jay Sekulow defended George Papadopoulos, a Trump campaign national security adviser, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.
During an interview on CNN, Sekulow insisted that Papadopoulos’ contact with Russia was not “illegal or inappropriate,” but said Papadopoulos’ made “a false statement about a timing about when he talked to somebody about Russian activities.”
Sekulow claimed Papadopoulos was “on a committee” and not “a senior adviser to the Trump campaign,” even though Trump called Papadopoulos one of his key national security advisers in March 2016, noted The Washington Post.
Trump tweeted a picture (below) on March 31, 2016 of his “National Security Team Meeting,” which included Papadopoulos.
In July 2017, Sekulow offered a similar defense of Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer with close ties with the Kremlin, despite the many denials from Trump and his campaign.
