Trump Says Puerto Rico Did Not Suffer ‘Real Catastrophe’ Like Hurricane Katrina

While speaking in Puerto Rico, President Donald Trump claimed that the Hurricanes Irma and Maria that hit Puerto Rico were not a “real catastrophe” like Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Trump, who has attacked the mayor of San Juan and accused the Puerto Rican people of wanting handouts, tried minimize the staggering damage to the island:

Every death is a horror, but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina, and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people that died and you look at what happened here with a story that was just totally overpowering.

Later during his remarks, Trump blamed Puerto Rico for ruining his budget, even though he has never passed a budget since being in office:

I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you are throwing our budget out of whack. We spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico and that’s fine, we saved a lot of lives.

Trump went on to praise members of his administration for their failed and delayed response to the massive damage in Puerto Rico.
