Trump Praises Monuments Built To Honor Confederate Slave Owners
President Donald Trump heaped praise on monuments to Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson who owned black slaves and fought for slavery in the Civil War.
Trump expressed his praise for these “beautiful statues” on Twitter, notes The New York Times:
Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments. You…..
…can’t change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson – who’s next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish! Also…
…the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!
The New York Times reports that most of the statues were created during the 1890s when Southern states were passing racist Jim Crow laws, and during the 1950s when there was Southern resistance to civil rights.
