Fox News and President Donald Trump pushed the same false claim that Paul Manafort’s alleged crimes happened before Manafort became Trump’s campaign manager in 2016.
Vox notes the first page of the indictment of Manafort and Rick Gates dates alleged crimes “from approximately 2006 through at least 2016.”:
MANAFORT and GATES generated tens of millions of dollars in income as a result of their Ukraine work. In order to hide Ukraine payments from United States authorities, from approximately 2006 through at least 2016, MANAFORT and GATES laundered the money through scores of United States and foreign corporations, partnerships, and bank accounts.
Even though Manafort was Trump’s campaign manager in 2016, Trump tweeted:
Sorry, but this is years ago, before Paul Manafort was part of the Trump campaign. But why aren’t Crooked Hillary & the Dems the focus?????

“Fox & Friends” co-host Steve Doocy pushed the same deceptive talking point:
Do we have any idea what sort of time frame we’re talking about? Because earlier, that BuzzFeed article that came out yesterday suggested that Manafort had some suspicious wire transfers back in 2012, 2013, many years before he joined Trump.
Fox News contributor Geraldo Rivera tweeted a similar deceptive claim:

Fox News contributor Brit Hume parroted the same false claim:
Here’s the Manafort indictment. Charges appear to predate Trump campaign, which is never mentioned in it. https://t.co/5oIwjcAdLG
