Former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio told Fox News host Sean Hannity that President Donald Trump “supports law enforcement” because he pardoned Arpaio for his criminal conviction of contempt of court.
Arpaio, who illegally racially profiled Latinos and immigrants, told Hannity:
I love that president. He supports law enforcement. I’m very humble. If you recall two years ago, I supported him and I said publicly recently, “Pardon or no pardon, I will be with him till the end.”
Arpaio said he was going to hold a press conference next Monday or Tuesday to “get to the bottom of this” and “expose the abuse of the judicial system and politics.”
Arpaio also played the victim in a tweet celebrating his pardon:
Thank you @realdonaldtrump for seeing my conviction for what it is: a political witch hunt by holdovers in the Obama justice department!
Arpaio provided no proof of his claim, but Trump praised the convicted criminal as an “American patriot” in a tweet:
I am pleased to inform you that I have just granted a full Pardon to 85 year old American patriot Sheriff Joe Arpaio. He kept Arizona safe!
