A father-daughter dance at a public school, PS 65, in Staten Island has been canceled because of New York City’s Department of Education’s gender-neutral policy.
The policy does not allow events based on gender, so the dance was axed, which was a big disappointment to fathers and daughters.
“It’s kind of a let down,” 5th grader Angelina Lubo told WCBS. “At least I could still spend time with my dad.”
“It’s supposed to be father and daughter,” grandparent Traci Javois added. “Father and daughter need to have a relationship, you know, feel good.”
Another parent added: “It’s father-daughter dance, not a grandmother slash son slash daughter dance. Absolutely not.”
Father Matt West stated: “It’s almost as if they’re taking it away.”
The school’s principal told the Parent-Teacher Association to reschedule the dance for March and invite the entire school community.
The principal of PS 65 and the PTA president refused to comment to WCBS.
