Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida called on Special Counsel Robert Mueller to resign from investigating the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.
Mueller’s team has indicted campaign manager Paul Manafort and his deputy Rick Gates, and got the conviction of Trump campaign and transition staffer George Papadopoulos.
Speaking in the House, Gaetz falsely claimed Mueller has no oversight when in reality Mueller answers to the U.S. Justice Department.
Gaetz also claimed that there are “indisputable conflicts of interest that are present with Mr. Mueller and others at the Department of Justice,” but failed to provide any actual proof.
Gaetz also called for a special counsel to be appointed to investigate the Clinton Foundation and the Obama administration’s Uranium One deal, a conspiracy theory promoted by President Donald Trump that was debunked in 2016 by the fact-checking website Snopes:
We are at risk of a coup d’état in this country if we allow an unaccountable person with no oversight to undermine the duly-elected President of the United States./ And I would offer, that is precisely what is happening right now with the indisputable conflicts of interest that are present with Mr. Mueller and others at the Department of Justice.
I join my colleague, the gentleman from Arizona, in calling for Mr. Mueller’s resignation or his firing. Moreover, we absolutely have to see the Department of Justice appoint a special counsel to look into the Clinton Foundation, the Uranium One deal and the FusionGPS dossier.
