Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said that Deputy Scott Peterson stayed outside of Stoneman Douglas High School when the mass shooting happened on Feb. 14 in Parkland, Florida.
Israel broke the news to reporters during a press conference, notes Vice News:
Scott Peterson was absolutely on campus for this entire event. He was armed. He was in uniform…
After seeing video, hearing witness statements and Scott Peterson’s very own statement, I decided this morning to suspend Scott Peterson without pay pending an internal investigation.
Israel said he saw a video of Peterson outside the school, but may never release it to the public:
We’re not going to disclose the video at this time. And we may never disclose the video depending on the prosecution and the criminal case. But what I saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of Building 12. Take up a position. And he never went in.
Israel said Peterson had met the Broward County Sheriff’s Department to meet the retirement requirements, and so he resigned and retired at the same time.
