The Living Way Ministries Church in Opelika, Alabama, openly endorsed U.S. Senate candidate and alleged child molester Roy Moore on its church sign.
The sign read: “They falsely accused Jesus! Vote Roy Moore.”
Moore is accused of sexual misconduct, including attempted rape, by six women when they were teens; Moore has denied all the allegations.
A church representative told WHNT that there are several people who have keys to the sign, and one of them posted the message, not the pastor.
The pastor was so upset about the sign that he waited two days before having it removed.
Church officials claim they have received many phone calls from protesters, and some threatening calls.
Technically, the church could lose its tax exemption for endorsing a candidate.
The IRS website states:
Currently, the law prohibits political campaign activity by charities and churches by defining a 501(c)(3) organization as one “which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.”
